Galvanized piping

This pipe may look like it is in good shape, and maybe so from the outside. It does not appear to be leaking, but inside old galvanized pipe is where the leaks begin. They corrode from the inside out. Also, the corrosion builds up closing off the flow to the fixtures. This may not seem to be an expensive fix, but notice the water main is also galvanized, all the way out the basement wall to the street. That means the home owner is responsible for the excavation, replacement, and the repair to the sidewalk, etc. It is quite an expensive project, as the pipe is typically below frost level, sometimes 5 feet below grade.
